The IFN consists of a headquarter in Milan, and four branch sections (operative units) in Bari, Padua, Rome, and Trento. The personnel is composed by 45 staff researchers, 18 employees in administration and technical services, 95 associated researchers, and a variable number of undergraduate, PhD students and post-doctoral fellows (about 20).

The IFN was established in 2002 by the merging of the Istituto di Elettronica dello Stato Solido (IESS) -Institute for Solid State Electronics- in Rome, the Centro di Elettronica Quantistica e Strumentazione Elettronica (CEQSE) -Center for Quantum Electronics and Electronic Instrumentation- in Milan, and the Centro di Fisica degli Stati Aggregati (CeFSA) -Center for Aggregate State Physics- in Trento. In 2010, following the re-organization of the CNR and of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica della Materia (INFM) – National Institute of Matter Physics - one INFM center, ULTRAS of Milan, and two regional laboratories, LUXOR of Padua and LiT3 of Bari were merged to IFN.
